Bad alternator?

I have a 99 TJ that is just my little summer fun ride. I believe the alternator may be bad. It's had a hard time starting since I bout it and now the dash panel keeps saying check gauges. All the gauges work except the battery. I'm thinking the alternator may be shot and was wondering if an alternator on a 99 Jeep Cherokee sport would be interchangeable. My stepdad has one and it's just sitting rusting away.

Have you tested the battery? Could be a bad cell. I'd also have the alternator tested.

How many miles on the XJ? Not sure I'd swap in a 25 year old part just to save $150.

I just put a $250 battery in it last summer so I don't think it's that. I've had it 2 yrs now and it's always had a hard time starting but it just recently started saying check gauges and the battery not reading

Could be the cables to the battery are loose or eroding. Check battery connections on top of the battery too.
Definitely check the battery (free at Autozone)… Also realize sometimes the batteries places sell have been sitting on the shelf for a while (even years)

It’s always good to spend $30 on a trickle charger for a vehicle you don’t often drive

New batteries don't mean much. You'd be surprised how long batteries sit in containers before they actually hit the store shelves.
