Recovery gear

My Zeon Platinum can pull 465 amps according to the manual. I've never messed with anything special nor have I seen anything problematic on the display. (not my pic) It tells me about the temp and the jeep battery.

I like some of the features the Platinum offers I just wish it came with mechanical backups available. The Axon Atv winches offer actual an actual load indicator and overload protection which I would like to see integrated into the full size winches.

The electricical smart folks can correct this but I seem to recall that as the voltage drops, the amperage rises according to one of those silly meditation laws. You're mistreating it on several fronts. Heat drives up resistance, which drives up current draw, which lowers battery voltage, which drives up current draw. At some point you go past what the motor can handle as far as heat goes and you smoke it.

Yep the proverbial downward spiral of DC electric motors. The old Wapsa motors used to send up smoke signals and the BIC motors just give all they can and then just give up. The current motors seem to fall somewhere in the middle.

The backordered for 30 minutes TRE snatch-block was delivered today. 2.33 pounds. 2.68 pounds with the pouch (which I don't carry on the rig - so there's .35 pounds saved. :D ).

The outside of the wheel is not black, it's gray - although the pic makes it look a bit on the blue side. The hub is black. Is that good news, or bad?

Here it is next to my old 6 pound Warn unit - made for cable. Off to the tow-pig it goes - in its new pouch. Now it weighs 6.35 pounds.

Go winch stuff for us and give us an update if the gray is good or bad.

Winch vs hoist round 2! Windlass is for lifting, so you'll see an anchor windlass on a boat. Winches are for handling sheets (ropes that control sails).

I always thought the old pto capstan winches were pretty cool.

The problem with being a cut and dried enginerd is you miss the punny stuff.
Sailboat is wind driven and there is a lass there on a winch, thus, windlass.

In the oil field, they call that style of hoist, a cat head. They have mangled more than a few operators.
