EV thread

I'm not necessarily against EVs in the right situation. However, you can buy a shit ton of gas or diesel for what that thing costs. Until they start making EVs that make sense, their market is going to be limited. EV should cost under $20K for a short range version, a bit more for longer ranges.

I concur, they're way too expensive these days. I am also vehemently opposed to government subsidies and meddling in the market. When they're marketable, people will flock to em like a fat kid in a candy store.
Note Biden's recent (illegal) decision to impose a OnE HUnDreD PerCEnT TAX on Chinese EVs.
There was your sub $20K EV right there. Now the price will be DOUBLED under ridiculous protectionist taxes...To be fair, Chinese EV manufacture is highly subsidized by the Chinese government.
Just think, if we could get rid of those two shitty governments, half the BS on the planet would evaporate.

I guess I'm wandering into political territory.

I have a few things to take care of and pay off before retiring. If I manage all that correctly (I should), I'll be in the market for a commuter car (Max round trip about 150 miles) in about a year. I know it's selfish, but I'm really hoping for a massive EV market meltdown in the coming months to make that decision easier.
If prices don't come down at least another 20-30% I'll just go with a gas sipping ICE.

Prices need to come down by about 75% to get my attention. As it is, EVs are a toy for "green" elites and those who have more money than brains.

Meh, if I can pick one up for under 20K and it has 100k miles left in it, I would save a pretty substantial amount.
I have no illusions that I'm saving the planet since nearly 100% of my electricity comes from coal (which is actually pretty damn clean now).
All I care about is the money I will save over driving the TJ @ 14 mpg every day.

Can you guys get ethanol free at the pump?

Yep, I know 3 stations within a 5 mile radius of me with 89 or 93 non-ethanol at the pump. It's usually about .50 more than the same octane with 10% E. It only hurts when I fill up my truck with a 35 gallon tank. :sneaky:

Many model 3's are around 20k right now. One thing tesla has done right is pack lifespan. They seem to do better than most other ev's for longetivity.

The way elon runs that company I'm afraid about it being around for parts and service in 10 years though

How so? I'm detached from EV maintenance, so other than the general stuff like battery lifespan, I really don't bother keeping up with the EV stuff.

There are a lot of 10 year old model s cars with decent range. Granted there aren't many other ev's out there as old,but many teslas are aging pretty well

Do you, or anybody else, know if time or usage degrades these EVs more? I know batteries and electronics have an expiration date used or not, but does more use speed it up or slow things down?

I'm a long way from an expert. Google has told me(😂) that charge cycles, heat and cold all contribute to the life or death of packs over time depending on circumstances.

Time itself? Idk

Both time and usage impact battery life. # of charge cycles, depth of discharge, final charge level, charge speed and discharge speed all impact battery life.
How quickly time degrades the battery depends on charge level.

I wouldn't do it myself. Only thing worse than a Tesla is a used Tesla. Too much gratuitous tech to go wrong.
