    All things welding

How many of you have heard of spark testing? Essentially this is comparing how ferrous metals spark when you grind on them. I find this helpful to tell the difference between high carbon steel & low carbon steel (mild steel) as well as cast steel & cast iron. This is important because those...

    All things welding

Assuming same settings for both welds? On the left If no weaving: you need to increase volts OR move faster. If you weaved: you spent too much time in the middle. The right looks good. The gap is because you welded the Left side first and it pulled the plate over creating a gap at the root...

You can use any of these: hydrochloric acid, ammonium persulfate, nitric acid, or iodine, and potassium iodide 1. Sand the cross-section of the weld to a uniform 600-grit finish (I use 220 grit sandpaper), before etching. Mirror polish the surface if possible. The finer the finish, the more...

    Just Expect Extra Purchases

Update #44 Well it's in....finally. It was a struggle but I managed to get everything done without damaging anything important. Massaged the tub a bit on the driver's side. Fabbed up a little frame to help move it into position & lift it into place. A couple of things I've learned on the...

    Just Expect Extra Purchases

Update #43 It's been a busy few weeks but my Atlas showed up in the middle of my fender redesign project. I've done all the assembly of the shifters & put in countersunk bolts. A couple of things I've learned so far with the Atlas: 1. If you get the 4 speed then install the shifters all at the...

Gap is not normal. If you use a flap disc on the edge you can see better. These were etched, but this is what it should look like

What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

No wire issues that I can see. Junction box is clean & so is the sub panel. I've got 10/3 wire on a 30 amp breaker. The motor only draws about 15-20 amps. I was able to find a replacement for a reasonable price. I went with WEG brand because it has thermal protection like you said & it's got a...

I guess not. It's the original motor. I'm researching to replace it right now. Any suggestions? I wonder if I can find one that has a way of keeping itself over heating?

I'm impressed with how much heat that little metal cover on the motor contained w/o failure.

What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

Looks like the fitting on the air line gave out & the motor must have been running non stop for quite some time.

Woke up to the smell of a burnt up air compressor motor.

    All things welding

If anyone is interested, here's my setup for welding. I got some 10 ga extension cord wire from my Dad & hard wired the wall junction box to a junction box on my welding cart which splits into 2 outlets, one for each machine. The welding cart is from a Lincoln Power Wave that my last employer...
